AFO with Light Earth Designs LLP/ Peter Rich Architects (South Africa) received a joint commission by the Rwandan Cricket Federation, to design a cricket and community facility for the returning diaspora from Kenya and Uganda.

The facility will be non-profit and will operate a sport for all policy to ensure that Rwandans from all backgrounds can have access to cricket. The development is conceived as an opportunity to empower and engage local men and women in need of work, skills and income though the use of local materials and high labour intensive construction techniques.

The site is located on the edges of Kigali’s wetlands. The pavilion is conceived as a parabolic series of vaults, and will use an innovative award winning vaulting technology using‘stabilized soil’ technology. Lightweight, thin shell earth tiled vaulting is efficient, low cost, has a low embodied energy and uses local labour and materials, transferring skills into communities and building livelihoods.

The vaulted pavilion and the landscaping work together to create a simulated notion of Rwandan topography. The edges of the development will encourage and organise existing or lapsed subsistence agricultural practices.

Rain water will be harvested from the two cricket ovals, amassing a large stock of potable drinking water which will be distributed at the bottom edge of the via a public tap.

This project is in partnership with the Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation (MCCF) and the Rwandan Cricket Association an International standard cricket ground is planned for Rwanda.

This project is in Design Development.
