AFO was appointed in 2012 to undertake a small commission to design a compost toilet block for Akilah's new university campus. Early designs for this project were to maximise the use of earthen clay fired brick, drawing inspiration for the form from traditional brick kilns seen across East Africa. Employing barrel vaulted roofs, local unskilled labour would be trained in these construction techniques, with bricks' being sourced from a local women's co-operative. Natural sisal weave would be utilised for infill wall panels.

This appointment has been extended to the masterplanning for the new university campus which is planned for central Kigali. The campus will comprise of classrooms and support facilitiesfor 400 students.

Akilah is a bridge connecting young women to the fastest-growing sectors of the economy, offering an affordable higher education that incorporates two crucial elements: market-relevant curricula and professional development programs that connect graduates directly to the workforce.
